6 Surprising Myths You Need to Know About the Clitoris

okay don't lie how many of you didn't exactly know where the clitoris was when you started having sex let me tell you you're not alone I've seen hundreds of medical students try to put a catheter into the clitoris instead of the urethra as a doctor I've seen and heard it all when it comes to women's sexual health and one thing that never ceases to amaze me is the amount of misinformation out there about the clitoris So today we're gonna set the record straight and debunk some of the most common myths about this important part of the female anatomy the clitoris the word clitoris comes from the ancient Greek word clitori which means little Hill it also comes from the word Christ meaning key interestingly on the day I was researching for this video a new article came out that talked about the problems that are associated with the neglect of understanding of the clitoris and in fact they looked at the number of articles that were published about the penis versus the clitoris and it was about fifty thousand to two thousand that's a huge discrepancy so it's a great article I will link it down below so you can read it if you are so inclined so that is just wild we've got a lot of work to do this body part helps women experience sexual pleasure but it's not just a small hill as people used to think what you see on the outside is the glands of the critters which is like the head of the penis it then extends deep into the pelvis like two structures and then it goes like a wishbone around either side of the vagina and deep into the tissue of the vulva and depending on the literature you read it can be anywhere from seven to nine centimeters deep in the pelvis so while the visible part of the clitoris might be small it's just the tip of the iceberg and if you've been following me for some time you already know that the clitoris is a homolog of the penis meaning that it gets erect when aroused fills with blood flow and stimulation to that area is pleasurable and often results in orgasm myth number two a vaginal orgasm and a critical orgasm are two different things so an orgasm by definition is a sensation of intense pleasure that's accompanied by a release of sexual tension and often rhythmic contractions of the pelvic muscles the vagina itself is actually not rich in nerve endings and so women often don't get sufficient stimulation through the vagina itself in fact in anatomy we learned that the large majority of the nerve endings are near the vaginal entrance or the outer one third of the vagina so when women experience orgasms from stimulation inside the vagina it's because the stimulation is actually seeming the internal body of the clitoris which surrounds the vaginal Canal so whether you're experiencing pleasure from direct clitoral stimulation or from vaginal penetration it's all thanks to the same structure the clitoris and for the women watching it doesn't matter how you orgasm whether it's with vaginal or clitoral stimulation as long as you and your partner are enjoying it some women tend to get frustrated because they feel like they can't get vaginal orgasms and it's not your fault it's likely just a function of how far the clitoral body and shaft is from the top and the sides of the vagina which is nothing you can control the next myth is you have to press it like a button so the clitoris is an amazing structure and literally is the only organ in the body that is there only for pleasure which is pretty awesome but no you can't just touch it like a button and immediately someone is aroused there's no one way to do it for each individual person some people enjoy more Gentle Touch others enjoy pressure some enjoy vibration or oral stimulation so talk to your partner encourage them to tell you what they like and try new things also even ask them to stimulate themselves and see what they like just like men can orgasm through a variety of different stimulations you don't hear women talking about how a man had an orgasm from stimulation of his frenulum or his testicle or his penile shaft an orgasm is an orgasm and while orgasms vary in intensity and length it's still the clitoris doing all the work our next myth is that you don't need to stimulate the clitoris for a woman to orgasm so if you've been on my channel before you already know this but nearly 80 to 95 percent of women need clitoral stimulation to achieve orgasm during intercourse and in the remaining 15 to 20 percent do orgasm during penetration but they're also getting simultaneous clitoral stimulation as well so there's really nothing wrong with the size of your penetrating organ and there's nothing wrong with a woman's response to vaginal stimulation when they're not achieving climax it's probably because you're just missing the most important part the clitoris the next myth is you use it or lose it in fact no you don't lose the clitoris if you don't have sex it doesn't just disappear like the p penis doesn't disappear if you stop having sex there's something called clitoral atrophy and what that is is the clitoris shrinks and becomes smaller than usual as women age their hormones go through significant drops in estrogen and testosterone which can lead to reduced blood flow to the genitalia ultimately having clinical atrophy can cause real distress and negatively impact pleasure for a woman good news is oftentimes this can be treated with hormone therapy so make sure to see your urologist or gynecologist to discuss that further and the last myth is the clitoris has 8 000 nerve endings until very very recently it was incorrectly disseminated that the clitoris had 8 000 nerve fibers innervating the glands the statistic actually came from a pig model but it was widely adopted and disseminated at a recent conference where they actually studied human clitori they found that the number of myelinated axons innervating the human glands were well over ten thousand so there you have it some of the most common myths about the clitoris debunked as a doctor it's really important for me to help women and the people who love them understand their own bodies and encourage them to explore their own sexual
