[Music] hello parents my name is Dr RI Shankar Swami I'm one of the pediatrician and neurologist at manipol hospital Whitefield hi parents I'm Dr sha I am also a pediatrician and neologist at manipal hospital Whitefield today we are here to discuss few very important topics which are concerning the parents we'll touch upon new nutrition in the children Dr RI yeah what do you think what is the status of the current nutrition status in India person interesting questiona so recent survey done by our family health department does show that almost 34 35% of our children are malnutrition whereas we also have another aspect of that which you can Enlighten if we see in the urban population almost 20% of the children are into obesity Zone these days don't you feel this is an epidemic for us correct so we are seeing uh uh sort of a spectrum where some children are malnutrition and some children are obesity no one size doesn't fit every patient so how do you advise patients when people come to you what is the general thing which you tell parents how to uh maintain a balanced nutrition for these kids yeah so considering balanced nutrition I would always tell the parents give them a balanced diet which includes lots of vegetables fruits proteins carbohydrates less of junks and lots of hydration to be given and which will provide vitamins and minerals to them so that their growth which is the buing year of their life is good how should we address about the malnutrition in our society so uh what I suggest parents is that I always tell them look think about every meal and which meal you're giving make sure that you give main elements of carbohydrate protein and fat and as you rightly said fruits and vegetables and which will also give you the vitamins and minerals so our healthy diet of rice is still very good for us uh anything with wheat ragi oats that would be good and uh proteins depending on if they're vegetarians then predominantly I go with soya tofu and stuff but if they're non vegetan then egg chicken and fish and stuff similarly healthy fat as well so I advise them and this combination make sure every meal has these elements so that's how we try but of course what do you think about the uh junk food going on at this point of Time how to limit that at this point definitely junk is the biggest Hazard which we are seeing in these this children so I always tell parents avoid packed Foods avoid uh junks or too much of of cheese uh too much of eating outside binge eating screen uh with the screen time the binge eating has added a lot of problems so we have to tell the parents to educate the children what is good why it is good and what is bad why it is bad if we don't tell them they will not understand or rather at one point I also told the parents try to do what you want your children to learn so they will try to imitate you rather than teaching them try to do what as a preacher so if you do that that I will not eat junk the children will not see you eating and that's a way they can learn more better rather than teaching them [Music]
