hello everyone I'm Dr nain Kumar LV I am a senior consultant in Orthopedics and Sports injuries at manipal hospital serup Ro uh today we are going to talk about ankle ligament injuries I'm sure more than half of them would have had an ankle ligament injury at some point or the other because it's a very common injury which we keep seeing all the time because this is because our foot sort of buckles inwards and you will get some swelling and pain on the outer side of the ankle which is a common way it gets injured rarely it can get injured other way around as well where the foot moves outwards as well but more commonly inwards so ankor ligament injuries when we see a lot of people would still be able to put a bit of weight but they're still limping but this is one injury where fortunately the ligaments can heal naturally we don't need to go and start doing M scans or even surgery for every single ankle injury because lot of these ligaments have got the potential to heal naturally so when they say heal naturally it takes time it doesn't happen overnight it can take four to 6 weeks of time bear in mind but it will gradually get better you will not be having the same amount of pain for four to 6 weeks but for the first 2 to 3 weeks there can be some more pain so one of the important things to understand so now what we are talking about is a ligament which has opened up like this it may be just a stretch grade one partial take gr to or completed so here if it has opened up like this then at least we need to keep it in position so that body can heal it if we keep on stretching it body cannot heal it so simple rules for the first week rice therapy rest Ice uh ice packs compression and elevation you know that apart from that wearing an ankle support depending upon the kind of injury it may be just a binder or a splint or an ankle boot any of these depending upon the intensity of the engine but wearing that regularly throughout the day for 3 weeks is what I recommend during the daytime you will wear it night you can take it off or shower you can take it off but that will help in at least body to do its magic and gum the things up back again so this is one thing which helps in majority of people almost 95 to 97% of people heal just by doing this in people in whom even after 4 weeks 6 weeks if you are seeing that the things are not improving or still there's lot of opening of the joint when we check and examine then yes an M scan is a sensible thing to consider if the ligament is refusing to heal for whatever reason it may be it may be because the ligament is completely Tor and there's a gap in between then it can't grow back of course or if there's a bad tear and something is sitting in the middle of that the other tissues then it may not heal up so under those circumstances uh we may have to do next level of treatments if it is a partial tear with some healing potential still we do treat that with with a plasma injection kind of things if it is a complete air where there's no potential to heal then I do a surgery for those kind of things but when we talk about surgery there are variety of different ways of doing that uh there are some good old techniques where people just wrap it up and whatever tissues are there they try to imbricate that in the sense they Stitch it on top of each other but with that one the amount of tension we can get I'm not sure about what I do is something called ankle ligament reconstruction where I rebuild that ligament by using one of your own tendons and I fix it to the Bone by using bio anchors which become bone eventually so it will all become back to normaly so that's the kind of thing which we normally do for people who are having recurrent ankle injuries or people who are not showing the signs of healing At All by 4 to 6 weeks so but yeah do get it checked if you're not getting better with your ankle in with simple treatments thank you [Music]
