I am Dr Shri Miku consultant orthopedic surgeon manipal Hospital Baner Pune today we are going to discuss about the arthritis in the knee joint what is arthritis arthritis is a progressive wear and tear and destructions of the articular cartilage of a joint it is a progressive in nature uh it commonly occurs in elderly age group more than 50 years of population it may affect people of all ages uh there are two types of arthritis one is primary arthritis and second one is secondary arthritis for primary arthritis there is no underlying cause it occurs in a aging population for secondary arthritis there is an underlying cause like post-traumatic or inflammatory in case of rheumatoid arthritis or psorosis or gout or any cital bony anomalies so arthritis is a progressive in nature and it will wasen over a period of time so we have to take steps to prevent the progression of the disease and also to decrease the uh symptoms uh what are the symptoms of the disease so the people who are having uh arthritis will have a knee pain uh pain will be there which versions over a period of time stiffness will be there swelling will be there and some patients may have deformity of the knee joints so how we investigate a arthritic knee so we have to take X-rays of the involved joint for the diagnosis of arthritis knee there are five stages of a knee arthritis stage zero is normal stage one in weent tear is there in the joint but you won't have any pain in stage two pain and stiffness is there and in stage three pain stiffness will be there along with the subcontrol sclerosis and cyst formation and ex new bone formation in stage four there is a severe loss of cartilage with the deformity in the knee joid with the involvement of multiple compartments and what are all the treatment options available for the knee arthritis uh as we speak me arthritis is a progressive disease there is no cure for arthritis only we can take precautions to decrease the symptoms which occur due to arthritis and prevent the further progression so in management there are two modalities of treatment one is a uh non surgical treatment another one is a surgical treatment in non-surgical treatment we have to uh take a preventive majur to decrease the disease progression like lifestyle modification so we have to avoid squatting or sitting cross leg or stair climbing or frequent bending of the knees and we have to decrease the uh weight so we have to opt for a weight loss strategy and we have to opt for a physical physical therapy in the form of muscle strengthening local application of heat or ice application or to increase a muscle strength and analgesics and medication also helps in relieving the symptoms of knee pain but those patients who are not getting benefited from the treatment with the physical therapy and medication they can opt for a intra uh articular hyaluronic acid supplement injection or a cortisone injection or a nowadays PRP is coming up for early arthritics knee and uh if you have if your symptoms are not becoming better with these modalities other surgical modality of treatment is also available in the form of uh HTO High otomy depending on the stage of the disease and if only one compartment is involved we can do unic cond knee replacement if two compartments are involved or more than two compartments are involved you may require total knee replacement thank you [Music]
