hi everyone I am Dr sandip Agarwal I the chairman of the Institute of minimal access robotic bariatric and GI surgery at manipal hospitals dwarka and I was formerly a professor at the as New Delhi and headed a unit of surgery there so I'm going to talk about barric surgery for obesity as you all know bartic surgery is very popular treatment for treatment of severe obesity is probably the only effective treatment for sustained and effective weight loss it's considered very safe and not only results in weight reduction it results in a Improvement or resolution of lot of diseases like uh type 2 diabetes uh obstructive sleep apnea fatty liver disease pcod and a variety of other diseases related to obesity in fact the impact on type to diabetes is really miraculous that even immediately after surgery when the patient has not lost much weight there's a dramatic Improvement in the diabetes status and most patients are able to stop medicines at the time of discharge the general myths about bartic surgery is that it is unsafe and has complications but let me put it this way first it's done laparoscopically so the recovery is very quick and the myths about it being unsafe is absolutely untrue it is considered as safe as laparoscopic surgery for gallstone disease like laparoscopic colicy or any laparoscopic hernia surgery and and the results of the surgery in terms of weight loss and impact of diseases is quite remarkable now consider it against the risk of obesity itself obesity leads to type two diabetes hypertension cardiac disease joint disease a severe fatty liver disease leading to sosis of liver and number of diseases from head to toe and in fact 12 to 13 types of cancers are more prevalent in people with obesity and if you considered the lifespan a lot of scientific evidence says that that lifespan is about 10 years shorter than an average weight individual so we have to consider the risk of obesity risk of batric surgery in context of risk of obesity itself and considering the amount of weight loss which barric surgery can cause in contrast to medicines and lifestyle which does not cause much weight loss I think there's no doubt in my mind that it is probably the only effective uh treatment it has changed lives treatment diseases which we thought were not going to be you know affected by batric surgery and it's a program which I started in a weac in 2008 where we have operated more than 1,400 patients with excellent results at Power with the global centers and we're happy you know with the patients response patient satisfaction and I strongly recommend it for patients with severe obesity thank you so much for your attention [Music]
