Embarrassing Erection at the Doctor’s Office? Here’s What Doctors Really Think

have you ever been worried that you might get an erection during your exam with the doctor I'm Dr Reena Malik urologist and pelvic surgeon and today I'm going to talk to you about why this happens how it's completely normal and what you can do about it and you know what you're not alone a lot of my male patients worry about getting an erection during an exam and so let me start by saying that this is completely normal as a urologist who treats so many men and examines them on a regular basis a lot of patients are very worried about getting erection during the exam or feel the need to apologize which you absolutely do not have to do so let's start off by explaining the anatomy when you think about the area of the genitals there's a whole lot of nerve endings and these nerve endings connect to the spinal cord and the nervous system and very often your body can create what we call reflex erections when those areas are touched during an exam it doesn't mean that you're necessarily aroused this is sort of just your body's way of saying hey this is maybe you getting ready for the possibility of having intercourse it's your body's automatic response and this is incredibly common and we as doctors know that this is a normal physiologic response to getting an examination typically when this happens in the clinic we'll sort of take cues from you if you look very embarrassed or nervous we'll tell you hey this is a pretty normal thing don't worry about it if you're not really responding then the normal response sometimes is to just ignore it and finish the examination again we know that this is completely normal and is not due to arousal now even though it's normal doesn't mean it's not embarrassing sure I think it's completely normal to be embarrassed when something that you believe to be very private and typically reserved for sort of intimate purposes to happen in front of your doctor who is also a person of authority but again I want to reassure you that this is completely normal now what can you do if this happens first off try to stay calm try to focus on the examination and talk to your doctor if you feel uncomfortable just say hey I'm not sure I feel very comfortable with you proceeding with the examination and guess what we'll stop immediately un lastly you don't need to apologize this is a completely natural response and I really want to reassure you that no doctor is going to get mad angry upset or accuse you of doing inappropriate things just because you got an erection during an examination in fact as the urologist I see this as a positive thing it shows me that your blood flow and your nervous system are working appropriately to create erections and that's a good thing and when you have good blood flow to your genitals that usually means that you have good blood flow all over your body including your heart and your brain which are other really important organs so bottom line getting an erection during an examination is not inappropriate or something to be embarrassed about it's simply your body responding to touch in a predictable and appropriate way if you guys found this video helpful make sure to hit subscribe and share this video with your family and friends also if you are enjoying my content make sure to sign up for my newsletter there every week I share with you a new research article as well as answer subscriber questions and talk about what's going on with me and give you just a recap of the videos that we we've released in the last week or so so I hope I'll see you there and as always I'm going to take care of yourself because you're worth it
