hello everyone I'm Dr shuti V a consultant neurologist at manipal hospital Baner as we all are aware recently there has been a sudden outbreak of gabar syndrome that is GBS in certain parts of Pune GBS is a rare neurological emergency where the body's immune system attacks and damages the nerves this causes sudden weakness in the hands or legs which can cause sudden paralysis difficulty walking difficulty in breathing or swallowing it is also sometimes accompanied with a sense of tingling or numbness in the hands or legs these symptoms develop suddenly and usually progress over a course of 1 to 4 weeks in some patients the development can be very slow whereas in others it can be rapid in severe cases the patient needs care in ICU setup as well as a ventilatory support the treatment involved is IVIG or plasma exchange if the treatment is sought early patients can recover very well and regain full function of their arms and legs let us also have a look as to what has caused this sudden Spike of cases it seems to be associated with an infection of a bacteria called caloba Juni this infection occurs after consumption of contaminated food and water and it usually causes abdominal symptoms like bloody diarrhea abdominal cramps nausea vomiting and headache let us also discuss what we can do as to protect ourselves from these infections first and foremost is to ensure the safety of drinking water boil water before drinking second is to ensure the safety of food which involves thoroughly cooking Foods uh washing vegetables and fruits thoroughly and maintenance of personal hygiene when to seek medical help if there is any sudden weakness in arms or legs if there is any paresthesia that is tingling sensation or numbness in arms or legs or if there is any bloody diarrhea so if you or anybody near you experiences these symptoms please consult a hospital with a neurologist urgently thank you [Music]
