hello everyone I'm Dr Rahul B I'm an consultant surgical oncologist at manipal hospitals Baner Pune so today I'll be talking on a very important topic that is mouth cancer surgery what are the things you should know before and after the surgery so as you all aware generally oral cancers they form majority of the cancers in Indian uh patients and uh many of the oral cancers needs to be treated surgically so prior to any mouth cancer or oral cancer surgery what is important is to have an correct diagnosis by means of biopsy and to have an uh idea about the stage of the cancer by means of an investigations like MRI or pet C so once you decided uh about performing a surgery for oral cancer you need to know certain things and um the important of them are that what is the stage of of your cancer and like any cancer surgery uh you should ask your health care provider about the possible complications and consequences of the surgery yes so what are the preparations which are required prior to the mouth cancer surgery you should stop certain medications like blood thinners and anti-coagulant medications as for the advice of your treating surgeon uh because these medications May interfere with the healing process or they may increase the risk of bleeding also you should stop smoking and alcohol consumption as smoking and alcohol consumptions are known to hamper the healing process and may delay your recovery then uh certain uh patients may need Dental Rehabilitation prior to the surgery and uh all these dental workups and prosthetic makeups like obturators should be made prior to the surgery after the preparation for the surgery is done then um the surgery for the oral cancers require removal of the tumor along with the mar of the surrounding normal tissue sometimes tumor may be located near to your jaw bone or near to the maxillary process and if the tumors are very close to these regions then they may require removal of the jobor portion or maxillary resections and removal of certain tooths so and along with that sometimes oral cancer they spread to the neck lymph nodes so uh for the correct uh staging and for the treatment purpose we also needs to perform form what is called as modified neck dissection uh that is removal of the lymph noes which are present in your neck along with the certain structures like salivary glands so once the surgery is performed postoperative care forms an important part of oral cancer surgery because process is complex and it is very important for the successful outcome from the oral cancer surgery uh after the oral cancer surgery so after the surgery um recovery process of the oral cancer surgery is complex but it's very important after the surgery you may feel pain and discomfort for which adequate analgesia is usually given after the resection for the oral tumors there may be difficulty in solving the solid food or liquid food for which uh you may be given a pipe um through your Nal cavity into the stomach uh through which usually feeding is given called as rice sh feeding and usually that is continu till the time um oral flaps or oral wounds are settled and then eventually you'll be shifted from uh liquid diet to solid diet then after the surgery uh many of the patients may feel difficulty in speech or communication because sometime tumor may involve um your tongue or the process like bandal or mailla which are important for the speech formation and uh for which uh during the recovery period uh we involve speech therapist and soling therapist to help you regain your speech and uh your swallowing mechanism then some patients uh for those we need to remove uh certain um bones like mandal or we to remove the uh teeths for those patients uh either Prosthetics or dental implants needs to be placed they may be uh placed um after the surgery during appropriate uh healing phases maybe post radiation after 1 year or if those patient who don't know don't need radiation for them immediate implants can be placed so these are all the things which are important and um you should be aware of all these things prior to undergoing oral cancer surgery so you have any of the query regarding oral cancer surgery you can reach at us at manipal hospitals B Pune thank you [Music]
