spending time alone is scary spending time alone in nature for weeks months at a time even more difficult but let's see the medical troubles that they go through during their time alone let's get started PE but now everything's soaked so everything's going to be 10 times as slippery why am I doing this in the rain I never like to see anyone swing sharp weapons when the floor is slippery oh just as I said that cut myself oh no getting a cut in the wild is really problematic and it's not for the reason most people think most people will assume oh my God no Neosporin how are you going to manage it's not the Neosporin that's the issue it's the lack of clean water and exposure to bacteria cuz really when you get a superficial wound all you need to do is rinse it under cool clean water maybe a little soapy water but like a lot of people think hydren peroxide Neosporin no no you really don't need that they trip over a log my axe doesn't have its face on it I don't want to go home doesn't stop bleeding I might be bleeding is the acute problem and that doesn't look like it's bleeding too bad but the real problem for him is going to be exposure to bacteria and infection setting in cuz that is a pretty big gash pretty big opening if he doesn't find a good way to clean it and cover it that's going to be an infection I I cut my arm it just won't stop bleeding okay it out to you now all right so he's really alone alone stitches stitches I can't take off the tape there cuz I'm going to start the bleeding again it looks as though it's got some dead in there as well okay I can't do that out here I mean you need a clear field you need to take out debris you need to take out foreign substances because if you leave something in there that's just room for infection to grow any substance that's not natural to your own body actually inside your body like entering your skin that can be a site where bacteria can multiply very easily and cause a very big problem for you dang toe man both my feet feel totally warm but then that tip of the toe just like hurts a little it oh that's so bad I already know what's about to happen so what happens when you get frostbite your skin can feel warm but the fluid that's inside your skin remember it's like 60% water that's freezing and causing damage and when that happens you need medical assistance ASAP because the stage before frostbite is Frost nip but then once that transitions into numbness that's when it's a problem that's why some people don't even realize they have frostbite cuz their nerves are numb and they don't feel it a lot of people wonder why like the tip of the nose the finger the toes are first to go is cuz these are the parts of the body that lose the most heat especially unnecessarily cuz there's no organs here so the body actually will clamp down on the arteries limit how much blood flow is going to those areas because it wants to preserve warmth and as a result those areas start to die off first I got to get a fire going and warm up my toe sometimes rewarming can cause a really really bad appearance of the area and a lot of pain I have a really big blister on the tip of my toe that's what causes the pain that's frostbite it's turned worse it turned like this purple color and that can get worse for up to 48 Hours actually the danger of the frostbite is once it becomes like superficial frostbite is one thing but deep frostbite once it starts affecting the subcutaneous tissues the muscles the adapost tissue the nerves that's when you start destroying ability to move and that's permanent disability that you don't want to sacrifice for a show I sure loed out with how many dandelion there are here even though I don't care for them well you know what funny I've critiqued before individuals eating dandelion but like it depends where the dandelion are if they're on the side of the road where there's a lot of traffic don't eat those if there's a farm nearby with pesticides and all these things that you can't clean the Dand lines with don't eat them but like in the wild if you have nothing to eat they are a good source of certain vitamins they actually have more iron than spinach and not just the flour but the root is also edible there's something happening when I stand up and I'm getting these head rushes yeah head rushes basically what we're talking about is early stages of a Vaso vangal Syncopy where basically if you're dehydrated your blood pressure isn't high enough to maintain enough circulation reaching your brain because you have to fight against gravity in order to have the circulation the blood reach the brain and in order to do that you need to have a good amount of blood pressure and you need to have good reactivity from your blood vessels so you need to have the little muscles around the arteries to pump a little bit in the legs there's also many instances where this happens as a result of people taking medications incorrectly or having it happen as a result of certain medications whoa oh he fell see what happens when you're on one of these shows alone and you faint did you just like good luck or did they have like a heart monitor well that was a pretty intense Head Rush yeah my guy you fell I've never had a head rush like this before I've never heard of them described as head rushes that's like a new term for me the problem is I think those dandelion are a diuretic which makes you pee and if they make you pee then they're keeping my urine color clear so I'm thinking that I'm hydrated when I'm really not what can happen if you consume a diuretic is that your body starts getting rid of excess water and when it does that that changes your color of your urine to make it seem like you're well hydrated number one number two because it's getting rid of excess water you're actually dehydrating yourself faster so it creates two problems that's why when folks consume a lot of coffee and they're like oh my urine is clear I'm good right it's like well caffeine is a diuretic so if you didn't drink coffee and just drink water what color would your urine actually [Music] be I'm honestly a little bit scared that I've done something to my knee oh no I'm losing stability and gives out when I walk a lot of times when you're walking on uneven ground hiking there's a lot of issues that can happen uh to hurt an e stability when I did tough mutter a few years ago I completed the course but around me there were so many EMS professionals helping individuals that literally destroyed their knees because of the mud that you don't have good stability you try and push off and boom you get the wrong angle the wrong Force put on one of the ligaments and it tears right then and there this knee as you can see has no lump this knee has a fluid sack yeah that fluid sack is most likely due to his knee injury probably what we call a palpa teal cyst or Baker cyst this usually happens as a result of osteoarthritis or rheumato arthritis but can also happen with miniscus injuries or ligament injuries generally the cyst doesn't cause problems unless its size starts impacting you because it's limiting your range of motion putting pressure on a nerve Etc these are benign growth so it's not like it's a cancerous problem but because of its mass many patients come into to have them drained in my office it hurts like hell to fully extend my knee and it's uh tries to give out on me every once in a while yeah it was probably um an ACL or maybe a miniscus injury or a combo I went straight to the hospital in Canada they flew me out they gave me some anti-inflammatories got me rested up for a few days and uh I flew back to the States the knee was a torn meniscus and a partially torn MCL oh MCL okay so we got like 50% of that diagnosis so I've been doing exercise therapy and physical therapy for I'm me just interviews like 7 months now yeah so a lot of people assume that with meniscus injuries they need to absolutely go for surgery that's not always the case Physical Therapy can help stabilize The Joint give added support by strengthening the surrounding structures therefore allowing that area to heal and yes while it might not be perfect it might allow you to get the same range of motion the same strength that you would be happy with that maybe surgery will also so surgery shouldn't always be firstline therapy for these types of injuries and we need to break out of that habit because too many times I see people going for surgeries that they don't need or aren't fully versed on the benefits versus side effects liver is that a squirrel not much of a liver fam but I'm learning you've got to constantly be upbeat no matter how bad it gets that's just the way you get through hard times that's like a good takeaway for life not just being alone in the wilderness holy crap right there little squirrel drumstick I mean squirrel is just like any other meat it's pretty rare for them to have serious illnesses they do have like the usual salmonella if you undercook them and all that stuff eat coli from droppings but now I haven't seen too many risky things with eating properly cooked squirrel oh look at that CDC small rodents like squirrels and they gave us other ones are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to transmit rabies learn something in school stomach's cramping bad I'm mentally usually pretty tough person but last night was humbling a salmonella intestinal infection is so so bad you need antibiotics in this situation oh and vomiting I would bet that this is some kind of bacterial gastrointestinal infection with the pain I'm experiencing man you can't keep any liquid down not being able to keep food down you can last but not being able to hold down fluids that's like you need evacuation because without fluids you could only last a certain number of days and if you sick and vomiting and dehydrating faster because you have like a fever for example that few days is going to change to one day and constantly hacking like that could actually cause a tear in the esophagus that would be very deadly especially as dehydrated as he is I got to fever again starting to roll through me now fever sucks I think especially out in the water buildup in me from that waste I mean I could die tonight I could go into like a shock it depends how long the prolonged constipation has been you can get constipation so bad that it causes intestinal obstruction leading to intestinal rupture it depends what the cause of that is that's not something we regularly see especially with given the amount of medications that are available at our disposal to treat the problem I'm I'm going to pull myself um from the competition I've been pretty sick and uh I think you guys need to come and get me I worry about in these situations having fever and abdominal pain not about constipation but more so about a diverticulitis colitis maybe even appendicitis I wouldn't automatically assume all these symptoms are result of constipation I've been having a lot of cramps stomach cramps it's just just is gut-wrenching like tensioning of my stomach muscles I'm already starting to feel that some contaminated water with consumed here um thinking Giardia causes such bad cramping and diarrhea but I was thinking about the about the water you know is the water fresh as it pumps out of this Marsh makes me wonder if I'm ingesting uh sea water it could be saltwater it could be also dissenter again Calera there's so many things that could be going on here this is actually why one of the biggest movements worldwide is to provide clean drinking water because leading deaths over the last like 30 years worldwide especially for children is dehydration and diarrhea so clean drinking water is so so important I've been drinking water out of a creek with a dead fish oh rotting on the side of the bank that's not good how much of the water did you drink here at least 10 quarts I don't think I can go any further you sure yeah you're done yeah I'm tapping out I'm done wow yeah look water is a Lifeline to try to maximize my fishing ability there's a couple of overhanging trees and and logs so I'm going to hang some line and hooks off of those in hopes that fish coming by whenever they do will take a hold of the bait and bite and hopefully swallow and get hooked yay biggest fish oh no don't pull it out like that please don't pull it out like that there's really two approaches here one is very specific way where you push down one end of the hook and with the string pull the other end of the hook while applying pressure and that kind of allows it to come out pretty painlessly there's the other approach which I don't like where people say push it through the skin and then with wire cutters or some other tool break off the Barb and then pull it out easily I don't like that cuz pushing anything in deeper just threatens you hitting a nerve a blood vessel more bleeding more damage so I'd rather do the first approach which is explained here quite well that went in my skin all the way oh don't pull it like that and I lost the fish don't pull it like that listen to my technique do I don't feel like it's safe to leave it in indefinitely okay first of all it's definitely not safe to leave it in indefinitely but that's a technique you got to know I'm going to see if I can lash the knife to the back of my hand to keep it in place what what is the purpose of [Music] this what are you doing I just made it worse yeah oh my God that was so painful I'm ready to get this hook out of my hand it's been in here for 2 days now she's been out for 86 days and that's what stopped her that's incredible what a champ what if it's in my tendon it moves the hook when I move my thumb we will use uh but if it's in the tendon what happens if you push through only difference right now is how they going to handle okay I mean they're being a little bit rude here she has a concern you should address it you can explain that it's more important to take it out than it is to talk about the tendon this is just a weird place to perform this procedure if it is attached to my tendon what is that longterm going to do the tip is coming out quite there yet this is the other method that we tend to say for medical providers it's called the forceps method where you use a similar motion like I described in the first step just with this added tool yeah there you go you've done that Carly I tried everything I could I couldn't get it out myself these people are so strange just got to keep working hard does it literally take everyone else as long to start a fire is it just me it must be just me oh no that's scary oh I knew that was going to happen I watched it happen I don't know how deep it is ah oh that's very deep I can't even look at that and I'm not squeamish especially whenever their hand is involved there's not only so many small little parts that can get damaged that if you don't fix quickly you can lose function in your hand forever you could also have infection to the very small bones of the hand leading to an osteomylitis which is an infection of the bone and then as a result you're going to need IV antibiotics that's a much higher level of severity of infection just going have a look at it where about is it just h uh it's about an inch long can you feel your finger actually before we do [Music] that okay what we're going to do is we're just going to bandage that up and then take you out to the hospital the hand is so complex that in hospitals unless it's very superficial even the ER doctor is not going to be the one correcting it we'll call in a hand surgeon or plastic surgeon to make sure that it heals to the best of its ability because so much can go wrong with the hand the time I was most scared as if I was alone was when I flew in F-16 click here to check that out and as always stay happy and [Music] healthy

FAQ

  • Q: Why is spending time alone, especially in nature, challenging?
A: Spending time alone in nature for weeks or months can be difficult, and it's even more challenging when you're dealing with medical troubles.
  • Q: What's the main issue with getting a cut in the wild?
A: It's not the lack of Neosporin or other wound care products, but rather the lack of clean water and exposure to bacteria, which can lead to infection.
  • Q: Why can't you use hydren peroxide or Neosporin on a superficial wound in the wild?
A: Because they're not necessary; what's needed is cool, clean water to rinse the wound, and maybe a little soap. Using hydren peroxide or Neosporin can actually do more harm than good.
