Post-Nut Clarity: Myth or Reality?! Expert Reveals!

you just finished having sex and all of a sudden something changes you might feel inspired to go work out go work on something you might feel regret or guilt or other times you might just want to take a nap some people describe this as post-nut Clarity and today I'm going to be describing the science behind it and why some may have this change in their emotions right after sex I'm Dr Reena Malik there's no scientific definition but it's often described as a Moment of clarity or clear-headedness that people experience after orgasms it's that feeling where you suddenly have a better perspective on things and your mind feels sharper than usual but is there any real scientific evidence to support this phenomenon well there's a few things that happen to our bodies during and right after sex that might explain this number one our brain changes during sex and up until the point of orgasm multiple areas of the brain light up and they're responsible for a variety of things the first one is the nucleus accumbens which is important for modulating reward and pleasure processing next is the hippocampus which is involved in sensation and identifying painful or noxious stimuli and the insula which is responsible for risk and reward Pathways as well as pain the anterior and cingulate cortices which manage cognitive meaning what you're thinking motor meaning what you're moving and emotional processing and the paracentral lobule which is responsible for how we perceive any movement as well Sensations and lastly the cerebellum which is involved in emotional control and so specifically some of these areas have been studied in one study they looked at men who were ejaculating they looked at exactly how these different areas of the brain lit up and they found that the area called the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for activities like decision making attention and social behavior actually decreased blood flowing that you're not really thinking as clearly as you would during ejaculation after orgasm this reactivates and then goes away after post-ejaculation and this might explain post not Clarity because finally that area of the brain is getting blood flow number two is our bodies also release different signals so before during and after sex our bodies will release a number of different substances that make us feel and think differently during orgasm the brain will release things like endorphins and neurotransmitters like dopamine which is the feel-good signal and after sex those dopamine levels drop and there's a rise in prolactin which is the reason why sometimes it's hard to have sex again which is called the refractory period I've talked about that before in my video on multiple orgasms so if you want to learn more about that make sure you check it out in addition after orgasm there's an increase in oxytocin which is the bonding hormone and so all these changes in signals it from your brain to your body may be contributing into this post not Clarity and lastly orgasms relieve stress I've talked about the many benefits of orgasms on my video about masturbation and one of the major benefits is that they have tremendous stress relieving properties during orgasm What's called the parasympathetic nervous system gets activated and this calms the body down allowing for a clearer mind that can then make better decisions but interestingly even though people call it Clarity sometimes people actually experience a variety of different symptoms it can be anywhere from being tearful to being euphoric in fact in a survey of 223 women and 76 men over 90 percent had what we call unexpected post-coital symptoms meaning they weren't expecting to have these symptoms but they had them after sex and that was not even in their lifetime it was within the last four weeks surprisingly the most common symptoms were actually a depressed mood in women it was often described as mood swings or sadness and in men it was most often described as really significantly reduced energy also almost half of the participants said they also experienced these symptoms after masturbation this actually has a term for it which is called post-coital dysphoria and this is something that occurs immediately following a completely normal sexual encounter and it's typically unexpected in another study of only men 1200 men they found that 40 percent of them had experiences post-coital dysphoria at least once in their lifetime and shockingly three to four percent of the people taking this survey actually experience these symptoms on a regular basis bottom line is that it's completely normal to have a change in your mood or symptoms after sex our bodies and our brains go through so many changes during arousal and orgasm and those things can have impacts on your mood so if you're having some of these changes you're not alone and some of you might experience Clarity but the data on why this happens or what exactly causes it is still not
