hello I Dr Vijay rangachari senior consultant in ENT at manipal hospitals Whitefield bangaluru I'll be talking to you today about a very common problem which is sinusitis sinuses are Hollow cavities inside your facial bones which help in Resonance of voice and secretion of mucus both these functions are important for a normal daily life activity whenever the sinuses are infected both these functions are affected first thing which happens is some kind of a swelling some swelling inside your facial bones can present in many ways it can lead to pain it can lead to breathing difficulty it can lead to some mucous discharge and watering of the nose it can lead to headaches sometimes even loss of smell smell most importantly we need to differentiate sinusitis from common cold common cold just goes off on its own in one or two days by taking some simple medications whereas sinusitis we do find that the medicines are required for longer term to get rid of this [Music] problem common cold often just goes away when we take Steam Steam and other regular medications like warm fluids and overthe counter cold medications it gets dissolved on its own so management of sinusitis consists of some home remedies and that may include steam inhalation medications for dissolving the mucus and treating the allergies and cold sometimes when it doesn't get better with the simple home remedies it's important to consult a ENT surgeon they will look for two main issues one the extent of the infection in the nose and secondly if there are any structures which are blocking the normal air circulation and mucous drainage in the nose can be done by simple examination we can go for endoscopies of the nose and sinus areas and we can go for CT scan of the nose and sinus areas based on these investigations we advise treatment which may be in the form of medications or long-term sprays sometimes there are cases where surgery is required to clear up the sinuses and improve both the breathing and the function of air circulation and mucous drainage so do not worry about sinusitis take care of your health and we are there to help you whenever you need our help thank you [Music]
