Struggling with Low Libido? Little Pink Pill AKA Female Viagra might be the Answer…

have you heard about the little pink pill also known as the female Viagra I'm Dr Rena Malik urologist and pelvic surgeon and today I'm going to tell you all you need to know about the little pink pill the little pink pill is called phlebanserin and it's FDA approved to treat hypoactive sexual desired disorder in pre-menopausal women now what exactly is hsdd it is essentially low libido whether it's for fantasies or for sex that causes distress and if you've watched some of my previous videos on low libido you'll know that many women up to 40 of women experience low libido but only 10 are bothered by it so this is for those 10 percent of women how does it work fobantrin works on your brain and as I've talked about in many videos before your brain is very much involved in how your body perceives sexual stimuli and in fact requires a complex system of neurotransmitters or chemical Messengers to be perfectly balanced in order to have normal sexual function and some of those very important neurotransmitters are dope dopamine and norepinephrine and this medication Works to increase those neurotransmitters and decrease serotonin which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter meaning it decreases sexual desire and so it's important to know that when you are suffering from low libido one it's really important to see a physician who has expertise in sexual medicine to assess whether you have other underlying factors low libido is very complex many people have environmental issues relationship issues overlying depression and anxiety that can all affect low libido so it's important to sort those out potentially get education CSX therapists if that's available to you to get help in those areas but if you're working on those things and you're still struggling this sort of medication may be beneficial for you and so when they studied this medication they looked at a certain number of outcomes the primary outcome being satisfying sexual events now that may not be the outcome that's valuable to you but that's what they say it is how many individuals who took this medication had satisfying sexual events and that include oral sex vaginal sex masturbation genital touching and they compare that to a placebo and if you've watched my video on the placebo effect you'll know that the placebo can be a very powerful drug because our brains are extremely powerful and believing that something's going to help us particularly in things like sex the most powerful organ you have is your brain and so if you think that something's going to help you a lot of the times it will but even despite the high placebo effect the researchers saw an increase in satisfying sexual events compared to Placebo they also saw improvements in orgasm arousal lubrication and even a decrease in pain or distress okay so you might be wondering well where's the catch if this medication is so great why is not everyone on it well there are certainly some side effects the most common is nausea so sometimes you can ask your doctor if you can be prescribed something for nausea to take at the same time it can also be very sedating so it's generally prescribed once a day at night before bedtime which is actually positive if you're having trouble sleeping already and you're taking medication to help you sleep this may replace those medications and the other things that word reported were dizziness fatigue dry mouth and in a small subset of people even insomnia however the large majority of people kept taking the medication despite the side effects so only about 13 of people discontinued the medication there's also one thing that you have to know when taking this sort of medication because it can make you very drowsy it's contraindicated to take an alcoholic beverage within two hours of taking the medication so if you happen to have an alcoholic beverage during that time period just skip that dose but if it's been two hours no worries some important things to know if you decided this medication is for you that you need to take it for at least eight weeks to see an effect and interestingly usually early on the effect is pretty subtle you might notice that things that normally didn't spark desire like watching a movie or seeing your partner now start giving you a little bit of a desired Sensation that you didn't have before and slowly that will build over time it's not a medication like via diagram which you actually take before sex and every time you want to have sex it doesn't work like that it's something you need to take every single day and interestingly they found kind of a cool side effect associated with this medication so this medication is not a weight loss medication but when they looked at the data of women taking this medication for over 24 weeks they found that about 21 of people had weight loss of greater than five percent body weight and that's pretty impressive while we don't know exactly how that happens
