everyone I'm Dr Navin Kumar LV I am a senior consultant in Orthopedics and Sports injuries at manipal hospital sjap road tennis elbow I'm sure you all have heard about this condition uh either from somebody or uh it has been popularized by a lot of people because Sachin tar had this problem uh so a lot of men know this as the one which he had so tennis elbow is a common thing don't expect people with playing tennis to get this one it can happen to other people as well even people who use lot of keyboards phones can still get tennis elbow as well lot of cooking stirring kind of activities can also cause this particular problem uh it's not a serious condition but it needs due care so when we say tennis elbow one would be having pain which is typically on the outer side of the elbow which sort of can go down towards the hand or it can go upwards as well sometimes uh typically happens when you lift something or hold something and grasp and LIF pick it up that's the common way people describe it so when we talk about the tennis elbow we are talking about the muscles which start from the back of the elbow and supply to the back of the hand there are six muscles which start from the Bony point over there out of them one of the muscles called ECB or extensor carp radialis bravis this particular muzzle is the main culprit when we talk about tennis elbow so at the upper end of this muzzle we would have multiple micro injuries or micro tear which can be called as degenerative changes which causes the pain if you look at that closely it will look somewhat like this so although it's a simple condition the reason why it happens is because the tendon where it starts there will be some amount of subtle wear and tear in that particular tendon this is not arthritis like lot of people think uh this particular condition can be cured with very simple treatments majority of you get better just by doing exercise based treatments uh when I say exercises these are things which you do at home yourselves you don't need to go to a physiotherapist or somebody else you will apply some heat to that area then you apply a gel and then you do the exercise doing it regularly twice a day for a period of time of 3 to 4 weeks cures a lot of people in home it doesn't get better with this kind of simple modalities we do the next level of treatments which is sometimes uh a PRP injection plasma injection which helps in the healing process for that that will take a month or so but that's a good thing to consider if you have got tenis elbow which is not getting better with exercise based treatments some in some instances we do an injection of a small dose of steroid that's not a wrong option uh it can help more quickly especially if you got something lined up and you need to get better immediately but otherwise the more suitable kind of treatment or more sustainable kind of treatment is a plasma injection in a rare percentage of people in whom nothing has helped them in spite of doing exercises in in spite of doing the PRP injection if they're not getting better then yes I do a little surgery for them where we debride the tendon by doing a small surgery that is a foolproof cure if nothing else has helped you if you are in that like. 1% of people who have not gotten better with anything else definitely this is not a wrong option to consider you can consult one of us and we can help you thank you [Music]
