What You Need To Know About Blue Balls and Blue Vulva

are you familiar with the term blue balls I'm Dr Rena Malik urologist and pelvic surgeon and today I'm going to explain everything you need to know about blue balls is it a real thing what can you do about it and is it dangerous so blue balls is a sensation of pain discomfort heaviness or aching that men typically experience when they have prolonged sexual arousal without orgasm or ejaculation in medicine it's called epididymal hypertension so where did this term even come from well the term Origins are a bit unclear but we know that it's been around in popular culture for several decades despite this there's very little medical literature on the topic there is one case report that was published in 2000 it was titled Blue Balls a diagnostic consideration in testicular scrotal pain in young adults a case report and discussion it basically described a 14 year old boy who came to the ER and had severe sharp stabbing constant scrotal pain it came on suddenly and lasted an hour and a half now when I hear this I think of something called testicular torsion testicular torsion happens in young boys or teenagers and typically is a acute surgical emergency when the testicle twists and the blood flow to the testicle then twists as well and as I mentioned before this is a surgical emergency you have to get that untwisted as soon as possible to restore blood flow to the testicle so after the doctor spent some time talking to this boy he found that this happened a week ago and he had experienced very similar pain that happened right after messing around and lasted for about two to three hours and then went away and the same time he realized this happened again he was having foreplay with his girlfriend kissing and fondling and in either case he ejected or orgasmed and the pain started right after stopping foreplay ultimately this boy did fine he was watching the ER and resolved spontaneously because of this case report the author said you know this is something we should be talking about because you want to make sure we rule these things out and ultimately still there's been very little literature even since this has been published but essentially what we believe is that the sensation of blue balls is because there's a buildup of blood in the testicles and pelvic area during sexual arousal the blood flow to the penis and testicles increases causing the testicles to get a little bit larger and more firm if you're having prolonged arousal and it's not getting released through orgasm or ejaculation the blood does leave the area but it can leave this uncomfortable heaviness feeling in the genitalia it doesn't mean they're actually blue however the blood that leaves the testicles in the veins is deoxygenated what this means is that blood has traveled through the body to the testicles and given oxygen to those tissues and then after it leaves it goes back up to the heart and tends to have a little bit of a bluish color however what we think is that more likely people call it blue balls because blue is sad and you're having kind of frustrated when you're experiencing blue balls interestingly this is a phenomenon that is not not specific only to Men Women also experience blue vulva similarly when they're aroused and don't achieve climax if you're experiencing this not to worry it's not dangerous but if you want to relieve the discomfort of blue balls or blue vulva you can try masturbating or finding another way to reach climax you could also try to lie down on your back and distract yourself with non-sexual thoughts also trying cold compresses to the area of taking a cold shower will kind of constrict the blood vessels and take the blood away from the area and maybe even straining to like lift something really heavy can also help reduce that blood flow for pain itself you can try warm compresses or if very uncomfortable you could try over-the-counter Tylenol or Motrin but ultimately it should go away if you notice that the pain persists long after you've been aroused it's really important to go see your doctor and talk about it or go to the emergency room if it's really not getting better so there you have it blue balls explained in a nutshell well it can be uncomfortable and even painful it's not a serious medical condition and resolves on its own if you are enjoying this content please make sure to subscribe and share this Channel with your friends so that we can get evidence-based Health content all around the world to people who need it as always remember take care of yourself because you're worth it foreign [Music]
