[Music] hello children I'm Dr Akila wasant a doctor for children with kidney problems from Nana heal City bangaluru I'm here to give a small educational talk about kidneys on the occasion of world Kidney Day kidneys what are they kidneys like the heart and lungs are amongst the most important organs of the human body but most people don't know very much about them in every person there are two kidneys located on either side of the spine at the lowest level of the rib cage kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs in adults kidney is about 10 cm long 6 cm Broad and 4 cm thick about the size of your fist it weighs appropriately 150 to 170 G kidneys work as a part of a system called as the urinary tractor system it's easiest to think of the kidney system in two parts the tissue part of the system that cleans the blood that is the kidney the drainage part of the system that links up to your bladder the kidney has two main blood vessels one that takes the blood to be cleaned from the body into the kidney and another that Returns the clean blood to the rest of the body there are thousands and thousands of tiny filters and blood vessels inside the kidney that do the blood cleaning and make urine the filters produce urine that collects in the drainage system of the kidney so what do kidneys do kidneys remove waste products from your body the food that we consume contains proteins fats starches and many other things these substances are necessary for the growth in the repair of the body but some of the food cannot be used and becomes waste which can be harmful unless the body can get rid of it along with water kidneys regulate minerals and chemicals and maintain a normal composition of body fluids this function is extremely important and it allows body to work properly and be healthy so kidneys remove excess fluid from your body balance the minerals and chemicals in your body kidneys control your blood pressure hormones are chemical substances that act like Messengers in the body and they help control how cells and organs do their work the kidneys make a hormone called as renin that causes blood pressure to rise as needed to make sure that the right amount of blood gets delivered to all parts of your body the kidneys produce a hor arthop poitin that tells the body when to make more red blood cells kidneys also help maintain healthy bones vitamin D is a vitamin that is produced when you're exposed to sunlight by special cells in your skin kidneys convert Vitamin D from the foods that you eat into its active form which helps with the absorption of calcium from food growth of bones and teeth and to help keep bones healthy and strong so here are some interesting facts about your kidneys so the kidneys are the shape of a bean it is the size of a mouse and every minute around 1,200 mL of blood enters both kidneys which amounts to 20% of your total blood pumped by the heart in one day you have 1,700 L of blood purified adults have around 7 to 8 lit of blood and this gets filtered around 400 times per day nephrons from both kidneys placed horizontally end to end would C a distance about 16 km or 9.95 mil your body can work normally with a single kidney as long as it is healthy so what happens when both the kidneys do not work well early kidney disease has no signs or symptoms some people do not have healthy kidneys and sometimes the kidneys stop working kidney disease means that kidneys are damaged and can't filter blood that like they should this damage can cause waste to build up in the body and there are blood tests to check how well your kidneys are filtering and therefore how well they are doing their job a urine test can check for alamin in your urine alamin is a protein that passes into the urine in increased amount when the kidneys are damaged kidneys function less than 10% of normal we call it endstage kidney disease when kidneys no longer function at all then the person would require dialysis or a kidney transplantation so dialysis removes waste products and unwanted water there are two types of dialysis methods which is hemodialysis and peronal dialysis kidney transplantation is an operation in which a healthy kidney from a living donor or diseased donor is placed into the body of a person suffering from endstage kidney disease the old damaged kidneys are not usually removed a new healthy kidney is put into your body takes over the functions of the non-functioning kidneys so how to keep your kidneys healthy there are eight golden rules number one keep fit and active number two eat healthy food to ensure good nutrition and a good control of your blood sugar level number three monitor your blood pressure number four eat healthy and keep your weight in check number five maintain a healthy fluid intake number six do not smoke number seven do not take overthe counter pills on a regular basis number seven ask your doctor to check your kidneys if you have diabetes if you have high hypertension or if you're overweight or if one of your parents or other family members suffer from kidney disease or if you come from an ethnic group with a high risk of kidney disease so I would like
